Easter break is just around the corner and there's a bit of pressure to make the most of these days. This is a great opportunity to explore the best that Portugal has to offer. If you're out of ideas, don’t worry - we've put together a four-day itinerary across three Portuguese cities so you can fully enjoy your time. The cherry on top (or the egg on top of the Easter folar)? We've teamed up with DIG-IN to recommend restaurants you won’t want to miss during your mini-vacation.
Over these four days, we’ll take you to explore Coimbra, Tomar and Fátima. Get ready to discover these three cities in the heart of mainland Portugal, visit historical landmarks, enjoy authentic cuisine and experience something truly special with the comfort and freedom of traveling in the perfect rental car from Hertz.
Day 1 - Coimbra
We kick off this itinerary in Coimbra, a city full of history and culture. Coimbra is deeply rooted in university tradition and is home to one of Europe’s oldest and most iconic universities. The city offers visitors a vibrant atmosphere yet remains full of charm.
Start by exploring the downtown area and strolling through the streets, where you’ll come across stunning landmarks like the Old Cathedral, the New Cathedral and the University of Coimbra.
Take a break for lunch at Zé Manel dos Ossos, one of the city's most famous restaurants, located about 10 minutes by car from the University of Coimbra. This small and picturesque tavern is known for its traditional cuisine and cozy atmosphere. During Easter, try their seasonal specialties.
In the afternoon, take a walk through the Botanical Garden and enjoy breathtaking views of the city, then visit the Green Park of Mondego by the river.
For dinner, A Taberna is the perfect choice. Located in the heart of Coimbra, it serves traditional dishes like roasted lamb and one of the region’s most famous specialties, Chanfana.
Day 2 – Coimbra
On the second day, we’ve planned something fun for kids and adults alike - visit Portugal dos Pequenitos. This theme park is a playful, educational and tourist attraction featuring miniature versions of Portuguese landmarks, making it a great outing.
If you have time, take a stroll through the Garden of Quinta das Lágrimas.
Day 3 – Tomar
The next stop is Tomar, a charming Portuguese city in the Santarém district of central Portugal. With a history deeply linked to the Order of the Templars, Tomar stands out for its impressive architectural heritage, charming streets and peaceful atmosphere that invites exploration. This is the most important Templar city in the world, home to a remarkably well-preserved castle and church.
Start by visiting the Convent of Christ, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you can take in a breathtaking view of the city.
For lunch, head to Taverna Antiqua, located near the Convent of Christ. This medieval-themed restaurant guarantees a unique experience with great food. Their menu features regional dishes like pork loin.
Continue your visit with a walk through the Seven Hills National Forest, where you’ll find a giant swing with a panoramic view.
To wrap up the day, DIG-IN recommends having dinner at A Bela Vista. And trust us - the view over the Nabão River truly lives up to its name. Choose a table on the terrace and enjoy traditional dishes at fair prices. Roasted goat is one of the most highly recommended specialties.
Day 4 - Fátima
Now we’ve arrived at the destination of this Easter mini-vacation with Hertz and DIG-IN. The city of Fátima is one of the most famous religious destinations in the world. We highly recommend visiting the Sanctuary of Fátima and the Chapel of the Apparitions.
Take a lunch break at Tia Alice, a well-known restaurant in the region famous for serving traditional Portuguese dishes. Its cozy atmosphere and rustic decor provide an authentic Portuguese dining experience. During Easter, you’ll likely find special seasonal dishes on the menu.
After lunch, just 2 km from Fátima, visit Grutas da Moeda Caves - an excellent choice for nature lovers.
To end the day, have dinner at Taberna do Bacalhau. As the name suggests, this restaurant specializes in codfish, offering it in a variety of delicious preparations.
