5 Hidden Gems in Lisbon

Lisbon has become one of the most popular cities in Europe, but with such a large influx of people coming into the city, there’s also a need to find the best places that aren’t always crowded.

Therefore we chose 5 of the best places to visit in Lisbon without having to worry about queues or access.

Miradouro Senhora do Monte

Located in São Vicente, the Miradouro da Senhora do Monte is a beautiful viewpoint located in front of a Chapel of the same name, offering a privileged view over the city. The viewpoint allows us to appreciate the landscape created by the Ponte 25 de Abril, Cristo Rei and the São Jorge Castle in a single breathtaking location.

The Magnificent view of the city is complemented with bands and street performers that inject new life into it, allowing you to take unforgettable Instagram posts.

To reach the Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, you will have to face steep and sudden climbs through the narrow streets of Lisbon, leaving little space for pedestrians. For that reason, any excursion will be easier and more comfortable when travelling by car. Fortunately, Hertz is present in the city of Lisbon so that your ideal mobility solution is always near you.

Carriage Museum

The National Carriage Museum contains the most important collection of carriages in the world, including unique versions used only during special ceremonies. The museum contains carriages of not just the Portuguese nobility and royal family, but also carriages which belonged to Spanish Royalty, English Royalty and even carriages used by several historical Popes.

Be sure to make a quick stop at the famous Pastéis de Belém which is nearby, however, you it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to avoid crowds here.

The National Carriage Museum is located next to Av. Da Brasília. Considered to be one of the most pleasant roads in Lisbon, it receives a pleasant breeze from the Tagus River and runs under the Ponte 25 de Abril. For that reason, your experience would remain incomplete if you visited these historical carriages without driving a modern one by Hertz.

Tropical Botanical Garden

While we’re still in Belém, we simply must recommend the Tropical Botanical Garden. Established in 1906, it contains an array of rare tropical and subtropical trees and plants, many of which are currently on the verge of extinction.

The garden is also inhabited by a myriad of birds, including the majestic peacocks. If you visit the Tropical Botanical Garden, be sure to stop by the Oriental Garden, whose Asian plants are adorned with Chinese ornaments and pagodas.

As we saw in the National Carriage Museum, the easiest way to get to the Tropical Botanical Garden will be through the Av. De Brasilia. For that reason, we recommend renting a Hertz car to enjoy a pleasant drive to the Garden.

National Pantheon

The Portuguese National Pantheon is intended to honor the memory of Portuguese heroes who distinguished themselves for their services to the Country. Dating back to 1568, the building was formerly a church, being considered the first monument of Baroque architecture in Portugal.

Visiting the Portuguese National Pantheon is akin to discovering the country's history, where we can honor the memory of both ancient and modern heroes including D. Nuno Álvares Pereira, Pedro Álvares Cabral, Amália Rodrigues, or Fernando Pessoa.

Located next to the Campo de Santa Clara, the best way to visit the Pantheon is by car, which is why we recommend renting a Hertz car.

Basílica da Estrela

Established in 1794, the Basilica da Estrela is a vast Baroque and Neoclassical church. Its expansive gray, pink and yellow marble interior is decorated with an array of paintings by acclaimed classical Italian painter, Pompeo Batoni.

When visiting the Basilica, make sure to go up to its dome to enjoy the beautiful view over the city and the Tagus River.

If the Basilica da Estrela calls for you, the most direct way to get there is by renting a Hertz car at our location in Rua Castilho.
